Part 2: The Season

Chapter Thirteen

The midday sun cast a golden glow through the window, capturing Charlotte’s attention as she sat at the table at her uncle’s home in London. She was much too preoccupied with her own thoughts to pay much attention to what her mother and her uncle spoke of, but she could imagine their conversation must be regarding the season’s events and balls.

Her cousin Elizabeth, as well as Lucy, spoke with much excitement of the social events to which they had already received invitations, and their enthused giggles were too much for Charlotte to bear.

She had secretly written again to Captain Springer, asking more questions about the time Hugh spent in the war, and also about details she was certain he did not wish to share with her. She knew she was likely invading Hugh’s privacy, and there was perhaps a good reason why he wished to distance himself from her, but her determination to know why he had been acting so strangely of late was growing with every passing moment. It was imperative that she find out what was plaguing him, just in case there was something she could do to help him.

Charlotte longed for Hugh to hold her in his arms, and gaze upon her in the same manner he had before the war. She recalled his bright eyes searching the depths of her soul and immediately finding love. She wanted that feeling again. For herself, and for Hugh.

She was drawn from her musings by her sister Lucy’s nudge against her elbow. Charlotte glanced at Lucy, wondering what she’d missed, but her sister merely nodded toward her uncle.

“Did you have a good night’s rest last evening, Charlotte?” Lord Langton asked, obviously for a second time, before taking a sip of his tea.

“Of course, I did. Thank you, Uncle. I am merely preoccupied and overwhelmed by the start of the season. It is my first and I am not certain what exactly to expect,” Charlotte said without a moment’s falter.

“What to expect? Why, social event after social event. Dances, and formal balls. Getting dressed up in your finest outfits to woo society. Suitors practically falling at your feet to sign your calling cards,” Lord Langton said cheerfully.

“And it is all so exciting,” her mother beamed.

“Indeed.” It sounded awful to Charlotte. Where was Hugh in all of that?

“It is no wonder you feel this way,” Lord Langton said. “The season can be rather overwhelming.”

“Or perhaps it can be something else entirely,” Lucy muttered under her breath.

Charlotte narrowed her eyes at her sister, wondering what she meant, but luckily her mother and uncle had not caught the exact words.

“Do articulate and enunciate, Lucy,” Marian said.

“I merely pointed out that perhaps Charlotte had caught something which makes her feel a little under the weather.” Lucy smiled sweetly, and Charlotte gritted her teeth.

“Oh, my dear. Do not say that! We must ensure that you are both in tip-top shape for the first event tomorrow evening.”

“I am perfectly fine, Mother,” Charlotte insisted, glaring at Lucy.
